Review - The Boston Kebab House

I’m obsessed.  Before this afternoon, all I ever heard about this place were good things and that I would love it.  Normally this sets you up for a very disappointing meal.  Today after a meeting in the North End, I stopped by the financial district where all the suits live in the city to meet my sister for my first Kabob House experience.

I tried to post a picture here on Tumblr but it won’t post.  Anyway, this place is AMAZING.  For less than $6 bucks you get a good sized salad with TWO proteins (I got Tarragon Chicken and Egg Whites) plus all the topping that you want!  Yes, you read that right. ALL THE TOPPINGS FOR THE SAME PRICE.  What didn’t did I get?

I got Tarragon Chicken, egg whites, roasted red peppers, mushrooms, green olives, feta, roasted eggplant, onions, artichokes, beets, and a few sunflower seeds.  For dressing I got this hummus vinaigrette on the recommendation of my sister.  It was everything I had ever dreamt of and more.

Normally when I go to places like this, I’m all over the place and end up with a big salad that doesn’t really go together.  Surprisingly, this all went together really well.  I can’t wait to go back and I highly recommend to all my Boston readers.  Boston lacks good healthy places to eat at, yet we are a very healthy city.  What’s up with that?

Simple Healthy School Lunch Ideas

One of the most requested videos recently is for school lunch ideas.  I decided to oblige even though you all know I’m not in school.  These ideas are quick to put together (tried and true), work great for bringing your lunch to work and are pretty cheap.  Most importantly they are healthy and use mostly* non-processed foods.  The reason there are no salads on here is that I think they are a pain to make to bring to work.  You know they are healthy and you know you can bring one.  These ideas are suppose to be things you might not have thought to make on your own even though they are ridiculously simple.

Here are my four complete lunch ideas:

Lunch #1 - Meat and Dairy (Nix the cheese if you don’t do dairy)

Turkey Sandwich on Ezekial Bread with Sprouts, Swiss Cheese and Mustard.

Apple

Almonds (about 15)

Lunch #2 - Vegetarian

Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich on Ezekial Bread.

Single serving Greek Yogurt

Celery Sticks

Lunch #3 - Peanut Allergy/Vegetarian

Hummus, Swiss, Sprouts on Ezekial Bread

Greek Yogurt

Carrots

Lunch #4 - Eat Clean, lower carb

Turkey and Sprout roll up with Mustard (no lettuce)

1/2 sweet potato

Almonds (about 15)

Grocery List:
Ezekial Bread
Organic Peanut Butter
Bananas
Apples
Almonds
Turkey
Sprouts
Mustard
Yogurt (Preferably Greek Yogurt)

Sweet Potato

 Celery or Carrots

Lastly, watch the video!  Stay tuned for more vegetarian lunch ideas.

Lunch. Veggies and mahi mahi salad.
Thursday and Friday Lunches are kind of like, “What’s in my fridge that I need to use before I go away for the weekend?”
I bought a local summer squash, so I put that in my salad with tomato, pea shoots (ie bean sprouts on steroids), mushrooms, left over mahi mahi from last night’s dinner, and a homemade balsamic vinagrette.
Dressing:
1/3 cup of balsamic vinegar
1 tbsp of dijon mustard
2 tsp of crushed garlic
1 tbsp olive oil
salt and pepper to taste

My Lunch: Mediterranean Salad
I haven’t taken a photo in awhile of my lunch because my camera is not being detected by the computer :( So today, I decided to show off my yummy lunch I made in 2 minutes via Photobooth.
I got a 1/2 lb of a Mediterranean chicken salad from Whole Foods yesterday (on sale for $2.40).  I placed in top of a bed of arugula and balsamic vinegar.  It’s amazing.  I think the salad consists of grilled chicken, artichokes, roasted roma tomatoes, kalamata olives, and capers.  It’s not very greasy so I don’t think they used much olive oil if any.  This salad probably cost me $3 total!

whats a healthy lunch to take to school? Like in a brown paper bag?

Sweet: 1 piece of fruit like an Apple, 1 cup of Strawberries or other in season fave

Salty:  1 Low Fat String Cheese or serving of Soy Chips

Protein: Turkey Roll-Up on Low Carb Tortilla like Josephs or La Tortilla

      Sandwich Ideas:

  • Honey mustard, lettuce, sprouts, avocado
  • Dijon mustard, lettuce, tomato and onions
  • Honey mustard, swiss cheese, roasted peppers (jar) I like to get my swiss cheese at the deli.  Get Jarlsberg lite sliced very thin, it will be about 25-30 calories if it’s sliced right!

For a snack during the day, bring a handful of almonds, or cut up veggies like carrots or celery with a side of hummus.
