How To Workout Safely in The Heat

While summer is winding down here in New England, for those of you that live in the South, you may just be starting to go outside to exercise again with a little reprieve from the unbearable hot temperatures. Make sure you check in follow these tips when working out in the heat.

Dress appropriately.

Your clothes are one of the most important factors when it comes to your safety while working out in hot temperature. Look for breathable fabrics that wick away sweat to keep your body cool and dry like adidas‘ Techfit line which is made with CLIMALITE technology.  The tank I’m wearing below is a favorite of mine for outdoor activity.

While on top, you want to wear clothes that will wick away the sweat, wearing boyshorts underneath regular shorts will help keep you cool and dry as well. Every girl needs a pair of the Techfit 3 inch Boyshort, at just $22! They are super cute and you can wear them by themselves with under a pair of shorts.

Next, you will want to try going first thing in the morning to avoid the high heat that comes in the afternoon or later in the day. If you go later in the day, be sure to wear reflective clothing so you are seen by motorists.

You also want to make sure that you are hydrated. Drink 16oz about 1-2 hours before your workout. Drink 16 oz 15 minutes before your workout and then drink 7-10 ounces every 20 minutes. Bring a water bottle with you if you can or stop at public water fountains if your city has them along the way.

While you may be tempted to down ice cold water, your body absorbs cool water quicker. Lastly, make sure to rehydrate after you finish as well.

Lastly, listen to your body. If you are getting dizzy, lightheaded or nauseous bring the intensity down a notch by walking, sitting down at a near by bench to take a break or just stop all together. I personally love outdoor workouts because the scenery and routes make the time fly by.
