Heartbreak Hill Half Marathon Discount & Memorial Day Recap

For once in my adult life, I actually relaxed during a long weekend. I am running the Runner’s World Heartbreak Hill Half Marathon in a few weeks on June 8th. I haven’t been training much so I knew I wanted to get in a good long run. This is the inaugural Runner’s World race and festival in Newton and there will be an additional 5K and 10K you can run on Saturday the 7th. The weekend really has a long list of activities planned so if you are in race shape and want to sign up, I have discount codes for each race you can use to get 10% off below.

On Saturday, I ran 10 miles and felt great. My phone died after 5 miles because I was streaming music from Songza, using my bluetooth to connect my adidas miCoach to my iPhone and also using MapMyRun. I spent the remaining 5 miles thinking of new videos ideas. It wasn’t as bad as I remember thanks to the views.

I’m on a new diet kick where I’m avoiding added sugar, dairy and gluten. It’s not that I’m against gluten, but it is keeping me from eating random junk I don’t need like my nieces animal crackers lying out all weekend. I had probably a total of 5 glasses of wine the entire weekend which is unheard of for a holiday weekend for me. With the exception of a wedding coming up, I’m going to try to keep it up until the 4th of July.

This meant that most of my lunches were salad based. We visited my favorite spot in Dennis on Monday after a 6 mile run. I ordered my go-to Seared Scallop Salad with balsamic vinaigrette. It was just as good as I remember. The dressing is a trap for added sugar but since I was good Saturday and Sunday, I didn’t care. The other place to be careful of added sugar with “healthy” summer seafood is cocktail sauce which is more often than not made with high fructose corn syrup.

We didn’t order anything for the raw bar for lunch but many people forget about that damn cocktail sauce. No a little bit is not going to kill you and usually I don’t care enough to say no but thinking about it changes the amount I do put on.

Overall, it was a realizing weekend. I totally had FOMO looking at my friends pictures over on Nantucket for Figawi but since I’m heading to ACK on Friday for a wedding, the trip didn’t seem to make sense. I do not regret how amazing I feel this morning however after getting three good nights of sleep.

We promised here are the coupon codes for 10% off the Heartbreak Hill Half Marathon. I hope you join me for the 13.1 mile course that is a loop! It does not finish at the real marathon ending point like it sounds.

Yeah! http://www.fedupmovie.com…it‘s a documentary. Katie Couric is involved in its production/interviews people in it. Check it out! I did the ten day challenge…www.fedupchallenge.com. It’s changed what I eat in terms of paying attention to added sugars even in foods I thought were wholesome.

Eat normal. Don’t carbo load. That is kind of a myth to be honest. The day before and the day of -- I would avoid dairy as it gives me cramps when running. I like to have a slice or two of toast with nut butter and banana for energy. Oatmeal is good too. I usually have a GU a little after mile 8. The day before, I would suggest a normal diet however.

Hi Sara, I have a question with your no added sugar plan--does this mean you’re cutting out fruit? I, too, am starting a no sugar diet and have received mixed recommendations. Thanks 🙂

Hi Sarah! Do you mind sharing what a typical day of meals looks like where you’re avoiding added sugar, dairy, and gluten? Thanks!
