How To Layer For Outdoor Workouts When It Starts To Get Cold

When it comes to fall workouts, layering is your friend. I am frequently asked in the winter how people should dress for exercising outdoors. It’s the same story as the fall, layer! Once you get get going, you start to peel off the top layer to increase more circulation. This post is a quick preview of an original that I wrote for the adidas Training blog. You can read my other posts as well as other fitness and fashion advice here.

For outdoor workouts that begin early in the morning or finish after the sun goes down, I usually will wear a warm comfy fleece like this Climawarm+ 1/2 zip pullover in blue from adidas. Sometimes, I’ll just push up the sleeves or if I get too hot, I’ll wrap it around my waist. It’s light enough that I barely even notice that it’s there. The slim fit makes it one of my more flattering top layers as well!

Jackets with heavy zippers or details can be irritating for removing layers while running with it around your waist. Stick to fabrics that breathe, are warm, keep you dry and have a pocket for your keys or energy gel.

When it starts to get really cold, my essentials include gloves, a winter hat and a long sleeve layer underneath my fleece to wick away sweat. Sometimes I’ll even wear a neck warmer too! It gets cold here in Boston but not that cold just yet. For more of my layering tips, check out the adidas training blog, featuring my and other fashion bloggers’ expertise.

    Hi Sarah!

I need new shoes -- desperately! Im just waiting to save up a little cash.. but, what are your favorite shoes? I’ve had the worst luck with my past 3 purchases… the current pair make my ankles swell!! I think I have a high arch, run on my toes, mostly run indoors about 8-10 miles a week. Any suggestions?

Great outfit! I’m more into ZUmba or other class-sports. So it”s inside and I don’t have to keep an eye on the weather 🙂
