One of the highlights for me during my vacation to Buenos Aires was visiting the Eva Peron Museum and seeing her grave. Many of you may know her from Evita, aka Madonna’s character in the Broadway musical. I had forgotten that she died at the very young age of 33 to cervical cancer. My tour guide on my first day made a comment about her cancer perhaps being a result of her “slutty” past.
However, I find it funny that the only reason she was considered slutty was because she was an actress and pursued a career in the arts beginning at the age of 15. Her husband on the other hand was well-known to have a strong liking for very young women. Perhaps Evita did sleep around, but there isn’t as much concrete evidence as there is for her spouse. Most likely, he passed on HPV to her. Not the other way around as the world perceived it to be.
This has nothing to do with the Sarah “FIT” blog except that fitness does slow down the growth of cancer cells and has been long shown to help prevent cancer. I’m writing about this because it reminds me of the current issue we have been hearing about on the news for over two weeks; Rush Limbaugh calling Sandra Fluke a slut. I saw a “Some E-Card” today that read “I see, so if I don’t have sex with you I’m a prude bitch, if I use the pill I’m a slut, if I get pregnant I’m an idiot, and if I choose abortion I’m Satan. Yay.”
I’m only writing about this because I’m frustrated by politics. I thought there was supposed to be a separation of church and state. I try to keep politics off my blog, but I’m very obviously a woman. I’m very socially liberal but I know my liberties are not going to be taken away no matter who is in congress. Roe v Wade WILL NEVER be overturned. Trust me. It just wont. Did you see what happened to Komen recently?
What I don’t get is why the Republicans are trying to alienate their female voters? Don’t you want to get elected? It doesn’t make any sense to me. What is most frustrating is that my ideals don’t line up with ANY party what so ever. Truth be told, I had no idea what the difference between parties were besides social issues until after high school, I thought that if you were pro-choice you were a democrat and that’s it. Now that I do, I just don’t agree with either party wholeheartedly and I know I’m not alone. It’s frustrating to live in such a black and white nation but I’m thankful that we have the liberties that we do. Stepping off my soap box. I won’t talk politics again.
I just found it funny that it seems like Rush Limbaugh lives in the 40’s.
What I donβt get is why the Republicans are trying to alienate their female voters?
The scary part about this is I know A LOT of women who agree with this. If you’re not married, you shouldn’t be having sex, and therefore no need for birth control. And then beyond that, is the Catholic Churches stance that birth control in ALL forms is bad bad bad!
It’s ridiculous in my mind.
And Rush is just a moron plain and simple.
Hear Hear! I read all of your posts but rarely make comments, but had to with this. I am in the exact same boat as you with politics. I am so passionate yet my views don’t necessarily fit into any of the parties. Frustrating. Great post!
Thanks Heidi! I am feeling super frustrated these days. I wish I could talk more politics since it’s a secret passion of mine but feel like I’ll lose a lot of readers if I do. I deleted a lot of info I originally wrote to try and stay neutral but there is no denying I’m a single woman who has a “roomie.”
I’ve been following your blog for a few weeks but after this post will move on to other fitness blogs that I respect. What you’ve said in this post has just gone too far. It’s sad to see someone have such little respect for human life and life in the womb. Abortion is genocide, and the killing of an innocent human life. You state that you are grateful for your freedom…what about the freedom to LIVE that has been stolen from millions of children?
Moreover, it sounds like you need to do more research on the HHS mandate regarding contraception. This has nothing to do with women’s rights and everything to do with government intrusion, and the government FORCING businesses and citizens to pay for something that they believe is morally wrong. Whatever you may believe, no one should be forced to give their hard-earned money to something that goes against their conscience.
Thank you Kallie for taking the time to leave a comment. I’m sorry to see you go. It’s upsets me that some people hold political beliefs so close to their hearts that they turn off people who do not align with their own. I do agree that their should be less government involved and believe or not, fiscally I’m conservative so I agree with your points at the end. I agree with your second paragraph but not your first. I’ve done my research and I was raised in a very religious family. I grew up pro-life until I went to college and took an ethics class. I learned the science behind everything and really it comes down to one question of faith. While I am not positive if life begins at conception or after the 1st trimester, I left my science classes agreeing that it does not begin until after the first trimester. I do believe that people who are victims of rape, incest, people on welfare and cannot afford another child and will need to rely on the goverment should be given the means to make the best decision for themselves and their child. It should be their choice. That being said, if research comes out that life does in fact begin at conception, my views are open for argument. I’m not stubborn and am always interested in hearing other people’s opinions which is why I value your comment (even if it doesn’t come off in this response). I hope you do come back for my fitness tips and if you don’t, I wish you all the best. Sincerely, Sarah.
“While I am not positive if life begins at conception or after the 1st trimester, I left my science classes agreeing that it does not begin until after the first trimester.”
Do you remember the reasons the professor gave for this? I don’t understand how life begins AFTER the first trimester as opposed to any point before then.
I personally think that your response to this is great Sarah and that it was brave of you to put this online. I agree with you 100%!
Thank you Katie! π I am very political but keep my views to myself for this exact reason… but the women’s rights issue I have no problem voicing and think more women need to stand up and be vocal.
Hey Sarah! So I know that i’m like super late to the party here, but twitter prompted me to seek out your one “political” blog post. I won’t get into your post other than to say you’re socially liberal and fiscally conservative…. sounds pretty libertarian to me. Actually a better term is “Classical Liberal” π Anyways, i’m very political myself and thrilled to hear you pay attention to what’s going on here and abroad (if more people were like you we’d be much better off). If you want to express more of your political views (and join in the twitter wars… lol) might I suggest you create a separate blog/twitter account and post under an alias.
Any who, sorry you lost some subscribers b/c you simply have a different view.
Sam from Twitter
haha yes! You quickly found my political post! Depending on the election I just might…
Interesting points that you make, but I have to say at least the Republican party isn’t worried about who they alienate…at least sometimes they stand up for what they think is moral rather than making each issue “situation appropriate” so they can win votes from everyone.
I agree with you, I don’t fit in with any of the parties either, and it is frustrating.
However, I do believe that if women are going to be having sex with who ever they want to, that is their personal choice, and therefore, they can buy their own birth control and pay for any procedures that they think that they need after they get pregnant and decide they don’t want the child. Not having sex until a woman is married is another type of birth control, or a personal moral choice you could say, and that is also a personal choice. But people who chose this sort of birth control don’t get any aid from the government….that’s fair. π Let’s aid people in killing their babies, but make fun of those who chose to control themselves…doesn’t make sense to me. And lets keep compounding the problem by giving 14 year old girls birth control and 14 year old boys condoms. Yep…let’s just keep spending money and compounding a problem that is just going to keep getting bigger. Not to mention the health problems that come with sleeping around…not everyone is responsible. Yikes.
Dear Sarah,
I have been following your blog and workouts for some time now, and I absolutely love them.
I think it’s great of you to express your beliefs on your blog. And even though I dont agree 100% with what you said, I still think its incredibly brave of you to express your opinion here.
What’s freedom of expression worth, if we dont exercise it?
I just hope that those who commented above me realise that -- whether they like it or not- we live in a world of moral relativism. As far as I’m concerned, you are great at your job -- and that’s all that should matter to your followers.
Keep giving us great workouts, and def keep writing what you are thinking as well. π
