Ultimate Bootcamp & Win New Sneakers!

Yesterday I got up nice and early for Ultimate Boot camp. It’s a class offered throughout Boston in parks and on the streets. I opted to take the 7 am class (vs the 6 am which is entirely too early for me) and it was a chilly 40-degrees outside. When I arrived, I quickly realized that other participants all knew one another fairly well. These are what they call “boot camp junkies.” They sign up session after session. Most do not have gym memberships.

The boot camp is set up 3, 4 or 5 times a week. You pick your location and time. The sessions run from 6-2 weeks long. Each day you have a different trainer, usually the same one on Monday and Wednesday and a different one on Tuesday and Thursday. The trainers mix things up so the junkies don’t work the same muscle group two days in a row. I was told the previous day they ran hills on Beacon Hill with squats in between. Glad I opted for Thursday! I ended up joining the class for the last day of the session. The others were chatting about a party they had that night with the rest of the boot campers, presumably to celebrate their accomplishments.

We started with a jog around Boston Common to warm up. I’m not sure I could do this in the winter everyday given the nip in the air. The day was called “Trainers Choice.” The trainers are given body parts and workouts for each day to avoid overworking the same muscle group two days in a row. Sometimes it’s cardio and abs, other times it might be upper body. Today’s trainer Linea, said she caters to the more advanced but always provides modifications.

We did a dynamic warmup (similar to that of cross fit), then a ladder of exercises to complete in 15 minutes:

  • 10 Burpees
  • 20 Pushups
  • 30 Squat Jumps
  • 40 Bicep Curls
  • 50 Step Ups (25 L, 25 R)
  • 60 Walking Lunges
  • 70 Bicycle Crunches
  • 80 Skaters
  • 90 Shoulder Taps
  • 100 Crunches of Choice

We finished with some partner exercises and the class was over! The time flew by and I burned about 500 calories! I ran 5 minutes to the park so I subtract those calories. The only exercises I did not particularly care for were the skaters (my back hurt after about 40) and the crunches at the end but no one actually got to 100 because we ran out of time. However, since every class is different, it doesn’t really matter! Chances are, I would not have to do it again. The camp runs again this Monday for two weeks for a Hard Core Holiday workout. The prices vary based on the number of boot camps you have completed, the junkies pay less and the newbies pay more, a nice incentive for their dedicated fans.

To find a class near you, check out Ultimate Bootcamp. I definitely think I want to try another class to see how much it really varies. I felt challenged in the class I took but am always looking for new ways to really push my comfort zone. The class runs throughout the year. I’m curious what happens when the snow starts coming? My best advice is to dress warm, wear gloves and bring water.

12 Days of Christmas

Today’s giveaway is a brand spanking new pair of sneakers from Puma called the PUMAGILITY. It is a super light-weight, flexible training show for both men and women. It debuted on Black Friday and retails for $90. These would have been perfect for

PUMAGILITY Wn s

PUMAGILITY is also great shoe for taking classes at the gym. “The pyramidal shapes that form the midsole and give the shoe its sculptured look are completely functional, too. It’s a nice little tech story: they compress on impact and widen the shoe’s base to create a stable platform — one that doesn’t compromise the shoe’s flexibility and lightness. Flex grooves provide a smooth heel-to-toe transition during a jog or a workout requiring side-to-side movements, too.”

I will admit I have not tested a pair of these but they sure do look cool! To enter today’s giveaway, leave comment down below.

Have you ever taken a bootcamp class, and if so did you do it throughout the winter? What happened when it snowed?

The winner of yesterday’s Gymboss will be announced at noon EST on my facebook page and twitter so make sure you “Like” or “Follow”. Also, one of my favorite stores City Sports is offering 25% off today for Friends and Family! It allows me not to have to think that early in the morning and I also don’t have to come up with a workout routine on my own. The workouts are different everymorning, so I get a well balanced workout everyday. I simply show up and they tell me what to do, it’s perfect!

I have a bit of exercise-ADD, as I call it, so boot camp exercises are a great way to keep me from getting bored. Hey Sarah! I have never taken a bootcamp class before. There are so many in my area but the cost is always too high. I’m just a broke college student!! My Dad and I do train with a local running group though. We have run two Turkey Trots, two half marathons, a 10k, and a slew of 5ks! We live in Dallas so we don’t really get snow, but we do get ice. In the winter when it ices really bad we just have to hit the tredmills because running outside is too dangerous. I have never been to Boston, but good luck with that snow! I have never taken a class like this but am very interested. They sound fun and I love the fact that the exercises are not repetitive. I ran cross country and track in college up North, and when it would snow our long runs (12-16 miles) were horrible. The worst was when there was ice on the ground and we had a tempo or speed workout, all the girls on the team had battle wounds after practice from falling so much.

First off, your blog is amazing! From the recipes to the workouts, I LOVE IT! Second, I have done bootcamp before. I love it. I find it such an easy and fast way to lose calories. (when I say easy, I do not mean because the class is easy lol) I did it throughout the whole summer from May until August, and now I go to my local YMCA and they have 1 class throughout the week. That coupled with spinning, running and weights is a good way to stay fit, lost weight and be healthy. I have heard of some bootcamps in Montreal (Canada) that run throughout the winter, however I think it starts more in February when the weather is STARTING to warm up.

I have never taken a bootcamp class in the winter, but they offer one here in Eugene. I am interested in taking it but I don’t know how I would do in the 30-40 degree cold mixed with rain. It snows occasionally here but we get the rain hard January-May! There was a groupon last year for a bootcamp class in the Spring so I am looking out for that again.

I did a boot camp class once, but I wasn’t the biggest fan. I think it’s because I generally don’t like working out outdoors. And in Canada I wouldn’t dare do it in the winter when it’s regularly -30 to -40 degrees celsius!

I’m looking forward to going home for Christmas break and taking some bootcamp classes with a friend from high school. It should be a nice change from my usual routine. I hope kettlebells three times a week has prepared me for it! P.S. Cute shoes! I’m definitely in need of a new pair. My old ones (Reebok ZigTech) really got put through the wringer after my dad and I climbed Half Dome in Yosemite National Park last summer. I have never taken a bootcamp class, I am soo not at that fitness level yet. And it sounds pretty intimidating. I take a bootcamp class every other Saturday at my gym! It’s usually indoors, and it’s my FAVORITE class. I look forward to it every time. They will have an outdoor class about twice a year when the weather is really good, but usually it’s indoors. We start out in the aerobics room and usually the instructors will set up a circuit, and we split up and do each station for 1-2 minutes. Stations include: Jump squats with a step, jump rope, pushups, mountain climbers, bear crawl/crab walk, walking lunges with a medicine ball, etc. Then when we’re down with all the stations, we usually will run to the bottom of our three-story gym and then up to the top, run around the track and repeat three times. Then back to the aerobics room for another round of the stations. One more time on the stairs/track and then we cool down and do abs for about 5 minutes before class is over. It’s the BEST workout, and the instructors are so awesome. I really look forward to that class.

I LOVE those sneakers. I’m seriously drooling over them!!!

not sure if its too late for the contest… but I took a bootcamp class once -- it was kind of a joke and thats when I decided I could do a better job and went after my NASM CPT ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m starting as a wellness coach at the Y soon

I haven’t taken a Bootcamp class before but I’m considering one this winter. I guess I’ll find out about what they do about snow!

This shoes look sick, I’ve been looking for a new pair of gym shoes. And I’m going to give that workout a try over after exams and on my Christmas holidays, it should give me a good jump start back to working out.

I have taken bootcamp classes, I had an amazing outdoor bootcamp 5:30am at the Y, it was intense, but I really enjoyed every minute of it. I want the ToneItUp diet plan so bad, can’t afford to buy it, but would love to win it.
