ENABLING YOUR PASSION FOR HEALTHY LIVING

Balancing work and play in Mexico

While I had the good fortune to take a vacation in March, I also had the opportunity to go again with my girlfriends to Mexico. I don’t usually take vacations so close together but being self-employed, unmarried and without kids, I saw both as awesome opportunities not to be passed over. However, since my income depends on me with access to a computer and in shape, never the less, a vacation is never fully without work on my mind.

S
Yes, I'm always working... even in Mexico.

I and 5 other girls were able to book a very affordable week-long stay using my friend’s parent’s timeshare. We booked a suite for 7 days at the Grand Mayan Palace Riviera Maya near Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Before I left, I shot a video showing the healthy vacation snacks I was bringing. At the airport, I grabbed a pair of hard boiled eggs from Au Bon Pain before boarding the plane.

At the resort, internet was about $15 a day. I took this as a sign that I needed to try to disconnect. I knew it was going to be a challenge for me but decided to buy it one full day when I scheduled my YouTube video to go live.

I woke up the first day and went for a 5 mile run as part of my training for the Reach The Beach relay (which is in just 3 weeks!). I rewarded myself with a mix between a banana smoothie and a mudslide. It was awesome. I typically avoid these drinks when I go out, but on vacation I encourage one a day. If it looks large, that is because it was happy hour, two for one, or just a double. My favorite during the week was my version of the Miami vice which is typically half Pina Colada, half Strawberry Daiquiri. If you know me at all, you will not be surprised that I swapped the Strawberry for a Mango Daiquiri.

I woke up and went running Monday (5 mi), Wednesday (6 mi), and Saturday (6 mi). Tuesday I did my outdoor Burn 400 Calories workout and Friday, I did a Nike Training Club workout using my favorite iPhone app.

I spotted this sign the first day we arrived and thought it was hilarious. I actually thought you weren’t allowed to run around the resort but as it turns out, it was just around the golf course. Still, a hilarious picture to have.

While some people may say, why don’t you just relax on vacation instead of worrying about work and working out. But I love running and working out. Going on vacation, lying around drinking cocktails is fun, but I need a little heart pounding exercise to be able to fully relax, otherwise I’m restless. It was an amazingly relaxing vacation that was filled with chatter surrounding book series The Hunger Games and 50 Shades of Grey. I am almost done Mockingjay with just a few chapters to go. I’m fully obsessed with this series. I started 50 Shades of Grey my last day at the pool and am about 100 pages in. The lady is a terrible writer but my friends can’t stop talking about this book so I’m forcing myself to push through. I’m nervous about what is to come. Have you read it yet? I feel like it’s the hot topic these days around any group of women.
